Following to the 2-day seminar, Forest Department Sarawak (FDS) has also organized a seminar on the Scientific Expedition to Upper Baleh on 9th December at Pullman Hotel, Kuching. Themed ‘Conserving the Gems of Upper Baleh, Kapit’, the seminar showcased the findings from the Scientific Expedition to Upper Baleh last year from 19st to 29th November with the participation of 39 scientists from UNIMAS along with FDS, WWF Malaysia and Sarawak Energy.
The 1-day seminar was participated mostly by UNIMAS scientists and researchers, Sarawak Energy, FDS and other various multi stakeholders. There were 11 papers presented to share their findings on the studies being done during the scientific expedition at Upper Baleh, Kapit. Among of the study focus area are geology, water quality, hydrology (fluvial geomorphology), flora, fauna and human environment.
The findings from the scientific expedition will play a crucial role in setting a baseline information and biodiversity data in the upper Baleh catchment area to facilitate the development and implementation of good conservation and management plan. It will also create a platform for multi stakeholder to initiate a more systematic discussion and capacity building for conservation spatial planning and working towards the headwaters and upstream watershed protection.
